Bolter
The Bolter or Boltgun is the standard weapon of a Adeptus Astartes on the field. It fires a 0.75in rocket propelled, high explosive round in semi-auto, 3 round burst or automatic fire modes out to an effective range of 500m. The current model in use is the Astartes MK Vb ‘Godwyn’ pattern bolter which features a digital ammo counter, ambidextrous controls and easy customisation with a variety of add-ons
The Boltgun will accept a variety different magazines. All of which are available to a battle brother. These include:
• Sickle - Standard magazine, 30 rounds
• Drum - 60 rounds, Prone to jamming
• Straight - 20 rounds, Easier to load
• Duplus X – 50 rounds, Two sickle magazines with a U-conveyer feed system
Add-Ons
• M40 targeting scope (Marksman and scouts only)
• Underbarrel Grenade Launcher (Sergeants Only)
Bolt Pistol
The Bolt Pistol is the smaller brother of the Boltgun, commonly combined with a close combat weapon in close assault squads and used as a primary weapon by Sergeants and other command staff. The current version in use is the Astartes Mk III. A Bolt Pistol magazine carries 10 rounds of downsized bolt ammunition with the same warload and calibre but a smaller propellant charge which saved size and weight but limits the weapons effective range. Bolt Pistols can fire in semi-auto or double-tap modes
Bolt Ammunition:
The ‘Godwyn’ pattern bolter will accept a variety specialist rounds which are listed below:
Standard Bolts
Standard issue rounds are comprised of an outer casing with propellant base, main charge, mass reactive detonator cap and diamantine penetrator tip. Astartes bolters are standardised to .75 calibre.
Hellfire Rounds
In hellfire rounds the charge and penetrator tip are replaced with a ceramic vial of highly corrosive, mutagenic acid which shatters on impact with the target causing horrific burns and micropunctures from casing splinters. The rounds were developed for use against Tyranid bio-constructs and are of limited use against armoured targets.
Stalker Silenced Shells
Stalker rounds are designed to have minimal sound signature and muzzle flare. A solidified mercury slug replaces the mass-reactive warhead for lethality at sub-sonic projectile speed and a gas cartridge replaces propellant charge for silent firing. These rounds are designed for covert missions and are often issued to scout squads.
Kraken Penetrator Rounds
Krakens replace the explosive charge of a bolt round with a solid depleted uranium core creating an extremely dense projectile which can pierce almost any form of armour. Unfortunately the heavier rounds over compress the feed in standard bolter magazines. because of this the rounds must be fed into the breach by hand and fired individually.
Sniper Rifle:
Sniper rifles are specialised infantry small arms characterised by their long range, accuracy and penetrating power. They often have higher calibre than standard infantry weapons to increase their stopping power. Sniper rifles are designed for long range covert kills and typically have complex specialised optics in place of iron sights or integral sights.
The Astartes Sniper Rifle is a long barreled weapon fitted as standard with a sound/flash suppressor and M.40 targetting scope. The rifle is blowback operated and fires a 17mm penetrator round from a 5 round magazine out to an effective range of 1000m.
The round has a diamantine tip and a hollow adamantium core half filled with mercury. When the round is fired the mercury is forced to the rear of the round and slams forward on impact, transfering 100% of the rounds kinetic energy into the target causing maximum damage and simultaneously preventing over penetration. this gives the user maximum control of his weapon ensuring that the round will penetrate almost any body armour but will not pass through a lightly armoured target and continue its flight, possibly killing a friendly.
Sniper Rifle magazines are the same size as Sickle pattern bolter magazines.
Combat Shotgun:
The shotgun is a smoothbore projectile weapon which can fire a variety of different ammunition types but loses accuracy over long range.
The Astartes Combat Shotgun fires 12 gauge rounds from a 12 round internal capacity in either pump action or semi-automatic modes. The weapon will accept a variety of ammo types which have a major effect on range and accuracy but the maximum effective range of the weapon is reckoned to be about 100m. the weapon is simple, rugged and reliable but its internal magazine must be loaded one shell at a time which makes reloading from empty a time consuming operation.
A full load of 12 shells takes up the same amount of space as a Sickle pattern bolter magazine.
Shotgun Ammunition:
The Astartes Combat Shotgun will accept a variety of ammunition types.
Solid Slug
Solid slugs are basically large bullets, they are composed of steel jacketed tungsten and have a larger than normal propellant charge to carry the heavy round. Slugs have good penetrating characteristics and a lot of stopping power.
Buck Shot
Buck Shot is composed of small steel balls packed into a shotgun cartridge. When fired they spray out of the barrel in an expanding cloud. Buck Shot has very little penetrating power and a short range but they have massive stopping power against lightly or unarmoured opponents.
Baton Rounds
Baton rounds are similar to slugs but the projectile is composed of a compressive polymer and the charge is greatly reduced. The round is designed to disable targets rather than kill them allowing capture and interrogation. Baton rounds have range equivalent to buckshot and are almost useless against even lightly armoured targets.
Frag Rounds
Frag shells are based on standard bolter rounds. each one is a spin stabalised projectile with spring loaded fins which deploy as the round leaves the shotguns barrel. The warhead is an explosive core wrapped in a coil of notched steel wire with an impact detonator. The round has range comparable to a slug an explodes on impact with a lethal radius of 1m. The rounds are powerful but complex and dangerous to the user at close range.
Breaching Rounds
Breaching rounds are used for opening locked doors. They are composed of an overcharged shotgun cartridge load with a cluster of 2mmX12mm adamantium rods. the rods burst from the barrel at supersonic speed and fly straight for about 3m before slowing and beginning to tumble in flight. At extreme close range the rods will blow through reinforced doors up to 30mm thick, destroying locks and bars and allowing the Astartes to storm the room. At ranges of above 2m the round has a similar effect to buck shot.
