Commander Zenodius felt something that he had not felt for near on half a century: dread. That symbol; crudely tattooed into the rebel and distorted as the traitor mutated. The sign was that of Chaos universal, the other tattoos and symbols adorning the crudely fashioned metal armour were incomprehensible. The others had not seen the symbol; he had made sure that they were not yet aware of it. Such things were better kept until they reached checkpoint Gamma, linking back up with the Imperial commandpost at Saint Sabbat’s square. With a nudge he flipped the mutant over, the evil symbol disappearing from sight.
This meant only one thing; chaos had come to this world. The inquisition would prove a vital piece in the upcoming months and segmentum command would no doubt approve the immediate deployment of multiple guard regiments and armoured battalions to aid in the inquisition’s purge of the planet. The very thought of the upcoming months held an almost sad aspect. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of the 65million population would be killed in the upcoming fighting and witch hunts. The greyknights would no doubt be summoned, their role as the chaos hunters and personal army of the Ordo Malleus. Theirs was a following that almost unnerved Rallus, there was a certain type of space marine that was chosen to join the Grey Knights and often they were among the strangest of the Adeptus Astartes.
With a sigh of frustration and contempt he turned and made his way back toward the convoy, heading to speak to whoever was in command now they had a respite.
“Sergeant Agrippa, regroup at the command chimera, be prepared to move out ASAP. We have spent enough time here already.”
*****************************************************************************************************
Master Sergeant Ruebak brushed himself down and barked commands to the remaining guardsmen from the top of the command chimera.
“Right lads, check casualties and gather ammunition. Any Corpsman, see to the wounded; whoever is left assist. “ Denten ‘Dog’ Ruebak was a grizzled veteran of many campaigns and had survived another situation where he should have been a gonner. Like the young LT who was now just another corpse on this chickenshit planet. The Lieutenant had died of an auto round to the right eye socket; at least it was quick. No, the Emperor was not ready for him yet, he almost smiled.
”Send a message to Green Zone command, tell them what happened and that we will be on our way shortly. Then message HQ and give them a SITREP.” Just then he turned to see a space marine clad in white, followed by one in the distinctive half and half of the Omega marines following him. The sergeant jumped down and approached the space marine. It had not been the first time he had seen a space marine but Emperor did it not inspire a sense of awe to be this close to the massive Astartes. The sergeant gave a quick salute as he approached.
”Sir, Master Sergeant Ruebak, Echo company, 122nd Vandian Grenadiers. I’m in command here; unfortunately the LT is on his way to the Emperor as we speak. Thanks for the assist; we were crow food if you hadn’t arrived. “ ********************************************************************************************************************
Techmarine Vahrdel shook his head with disappointment at the loss of another Imperial machine. The chimera, while not an Adeptus Astartes vehicle was one of the backbones of the guard, along with the Leman Russ battle tank, named after the Space Wolf primarch in recognition of past events. Just then Sergeant Julius arrived and nodded his greeting to the techmarine, who replied with a slight movement of the head. Ancient tech incorporated into his almost totally artificial body whirred and buzzed as he sent his manservant servitor to work, moving the wreck of the chimera to the side just enough to let the convoy past. The techmarine continued to talk and mutter to him, his thoughts coming aloud as more and more of the scouts arrived at the head of the convoy. His voice a strange mix of an artificial voicebox marked by a hidden eccentricity.
“Great shame, yes. No time for salvage either. Tsk Tsk, must hurry.”
Just then the voice of Commander Zenodius piped up on the scout squad comm.-net.
“Sergeant Quintus. As soon as Brother Vahrdel is done moving the wreck we will get this convoy rolling. Your scouts on point, head to co-ords 487 by 592, checkpoint Zulu, secure the area around the resupply hawk until we catch up with you.”

++Sergeant Agrippa, regroup at the command chimera, be prepared to move out ASAP. We have spent enough time here already++
Sgt Agrippa listened to the vox message as he scanned the last room of the upper floor of the buildings East Wing over the sites of his Bolter, aware that the firing had stopped, before replying.
“AKNOWLEDGED AND UNDERSTOOD FORCE COMMANDER”
Activating 1st Tactical Squads Vox channel as he advanced back towards the stairwell
“FIRST SQUAD REGROUP AT COMMAND CHIMERA CELAR ET AUDAX BROTHERS”
Stopping briefly in the first room as Brothers Cartern and Muleto left, Manius knelt down next to one of the dead Adepts and carefully removed the mans identity bracelet.
“ADEPT 5th CLASS MASSERN”
He read aloud and looked down at the dissected husk.
“MORTUI NON DOLENT”
He stood up still looking down at the body and in a low voice whispered to the corpse
“You shall be avenged Ten fold Adept, I Sgt Manius Agrippa swear it”
Dropping the identity bracelet onto the body he followed after the rest of Fireteam Charlie.

“FIRST SQUAD REGROUP AT COMMAND CHIMERA CELAR ET AUDAX BROTHERS” came to voice of Sergeant Agrippa through the vox.
Jacen picked himself up and, along with Brother Muleto, made their way out of the Administratum building. As Jacen was passing by the dead bodies of the Traitors and Adepts he noticed something odd. There was some sort of pendant hanging from one of the traitor's necks.
Leaning down, Jacen ripped the pendant from the corpse's neck and looked at it. What caught his vision chilled him. It was a several small pieces of metal fashioned into the crude form of a Chaos star.
So, the forces of Chaos were the ones behind this attack. The commander needed to be warned. Making sure that Muleto didn't take notice, Jacen put the pendant into one of his empty ammo poutch and continued outside, Commander Zenodius needed to know about this.

Already finished ? He didn't even fired, except for a magazine in covering fire and a grenade... Traitors aren't what they were before.
Removing his helmet, Roland took a long breath of Lirdan's atmosphere. The scent of blood was strong, but not enough to blind his enhanced smell. He breathed again, concentrating on the faint odors of this new world, odors of city, cloaked behind powder and burning prometheum.
Jacen's pace came to a halt behind him. Roland turned back and saw his brother looking at a corpse. What was he doing again ?
"You heard the sergeant, we've got to go. We will never win this war if you go checking every dead body."

A man of some stature approached Silvanus and his fellow brother. An Imperial Guardsman for some time as evidenced by his clothing. Silvanus could also tell that this man didn't seem to be the type normally to be leading and that a death in the chain of command must have left him in charge.
”Sir, Master Sergeant Ruebak, Echo company, 122nd Vandian Grenadiers. I’m in command here; unfortunately the LT is on his way to the Emperor as we speak. Thanks for the assist; we were crow food if you hadn’t arrived. “
Silvanus took a moment to consider the situation...
With that thought he turned to the Sergeant and told him, " It's good to see someone still serving the Emperor so valiantly in such a situation." Forming the sign of the double headed eagle he continued, " My name is Apothecary Silvanus of the Omega Marines."
Silvanus paused for his fellow marine's reply or perhaps a follow up by the Sgt.

Shalluat reached down with his armored gauntlet and flicked the safety on the massive weapon in his grasp. He walked stoically towards the command Chimera, his back straight and his stride purposeful. The heavy bolter was held across the armor of his chest, covering up the golden Aquila that lay embroiled on his armor. He glanced to his left and saw Amores walking alongside him. He narrowed his eyes, suspicion blossoming in his very Astartes mind.
Kraytirous' gaze went to the bright white armor of the Apothecary and the khaki colored clothes of the man in charge of this convoy. He scowled behind his helmet. He had a hunch that this was a far stupider move by Imperial Forces then it seemed. This area did not seem like it had been in Imperial control at all. If so, then why had the Guardsmen come this way with a convoy?

"You heard the sergeant, we've got to go. We will never win this war if you go checking every dead body." came the voice of Brother Roland ahead of him.
Jacen stood up, nodded at Muleto, and proceeded out into the streets. It was nearly silent, the only sound being that of the wounded Guardsmen laying around. Seeing these soldiers, warriors of the Emperor who fought without the gene-enhanced strength of the Astartes, being slaughtered like this made Jacen feel nothing but fury and remorse.
Perhaps if they had been faster more of these brave Guardsmen would have survived. Jacen shook these thoughts from his mind. No time to think of that now. He must not feel remorse, instead he should feel righteous! These Guardsmen might have fallen in battle, but they were with the Emperor, beloved-by-all, now! His duty was not to feel sad, but to kill the Traitors responsible for their deaths and avenge the fallen.
Jacen walked through the dust and smoke to see Commander Zenodius and Apothecary Silvanus talking to a Guardsmen, obviously the man in charge.
Jacen walked up behind the Commander and stood at attention. After he was done with the Guardsmen he would have to show him the pendant he had found.

“Sergeant Quintus. As soon as Brother Vahrdel is done moving the wreck we will get this convoy rolling. Your scouts on point, head to co-ords 487 by 592, checkpoint Zulu, secure the area around the resupply hawk until we catch up with you.”
Julius acknowledged the order with a double tap of his comm-link and pulled his dataslate from a pouch on his belt. He pulled up a map of the local topography and quickly planned out an advance route between the ambush site and the resupply thunderhawks LZ.
"Quintus to all scouts. We're moving out in open fireteam spread. Our objective is to clear the route to the resupply LZ ahead of the main convoy. Section Alpha with me to the left of the road. Section Bravo take the right under local command of scout Calpurnius. Move out!"
Julius began to move off to the left of the road, switching out his half empty magazine for a fresh one as he went. He took up the first cover position, scanning the area ahead for threats as the rest of Section Alpha moved past to the next position.

"You heard the sergeant, open fireteam pattern." Magnus said to the other scouts of bravo section. Local command, an honour to be sure, he just had to make sure he didn't let the sergeant down. "Goloar, take point, Tabrias cover the rear. When we get to the resupply hawk we'll meet up with Tranquillius and move on from there."
Sergeant Quintus had both snipers, which meant Magnus only had bolt weapons if they got in a fight, but he had the heavy bolter so unless it was a tank they should be fine. And of course if it was a tank then a sniper rifle would be unlikely to make a difference.
Ah, he nearly forgot- "Remember brothers, make sure you have line of sight to both other members of bravo section at all times, and keep an open com channel at all times. But, stay under radio silence unless it's important, hand signals will do fine. We don't really know what to expect it's best to be cautious."

"Goloar, take point, Tabrias cover the rear. When we get to the resupply hawk we'll meet up with Tranquillius and move on from there." Narek executed the order without hesitation. "Aye brother, moving into position." He moved up to the front of Bravo, making sure that he stayed in formation.
Point man, a favoured position for Narek. Not only would he be responsible for leading his squad to the objective safely, but if any traitors were foolish to ambush them he would be able to exact the Emperor's judgement swiftly upon them. He prayed silently that he performed this task well, for if he didn't, lives could be loss.
He kept his eyes open and focused on the terrain ahead. Sweeping his gaze across the road in front of him, looking for any obstruction in the surrounding area that might be a traitor, or any pins or wires on the road. He advanced in a semi-crouched walk, keeping close so the others don't fall behind

Commander Zenodius rejoined the delta fireteam of Tactical squad Agrippa at the command chimera, where the apothecary was just making the introductions. The sergeant came to a startled attention as Rallus approached.
“My lord, I was just thanking honoured apothecary Silvanus of the situation. I wasn’t aware of the Omega marines deployment on Lirdian. I am Master Sergeant Rueback and I’m left in command of what you see here.”
Rallus simply nodded, his eyes scanning the remnants of the convoy.
“At ease Sergeant. Carry on with your route. Techmarine Vahrdel is clearing the wreckage as we speak and you should be rolling any minute now. I regret that we cannot escort you to the green zone but you should be clear of any hostiles once you hit the outskirts. “
The sergeant nodded a quick confirmation of his comments before turning to shout to the nearest guardsmen. Before the words left his lips he was cut short by Zenodius.
“In future Master Sergeant, I would appreciate a little more faith in the Emperor. Just as well that a commissar was not accompanying you in this venture, for I fear you would already be dead.”
With that Rallus turned to walk toward the head of the convoy, the members of delta fireteam gave a last appraisal of the situation and then turned to follow him.
“Sergeant Agrippa. Prepare to follow Scout Squad Quintus to the Thunderhawk RV. Double Time.” Rallus turned to Silvanus and nodded before carrying on, “Command section on me, we move out immediately.”
Just then the commn-net cracked with the metallic voice of Techmarine Vahrdel.
“Commander, wreckage is cleared. The convoy may recommence its task.” The techmarine was often a marine of few words, not unsurprising as many a battle brother had this traint. However, what was surprising was that Vahrdel was often very chatty when one conversed for an extended period of time with him. As with all techmarines, many viewed them with a sense of awe and awkwardness, many forgetting there was a battle brother beneath the mechanical outer shell.
*****************************************************************************************************
Brother Fendal opened up the cockpit comm.-net link to the crewbay.
“5 minutes to landing young one. Prepare to disembark and help secure the site, I have word that Sergeant quintus and his scout squad are ETA 10 minutes so we will have to secure the site until they arrive.”
The black and white thunderhawk roared across the planet, soaring across the temperate forests and plains as it rushed toward the outskirts of the city.
Brother Fendal smiled, of course he didn’t like to admit it but he took a great pleasure in his duty. Since a young novice he had been obsessed with the chapter’s vessels. Anything mechanic was an awe to him. While he could repair most engine faults he detested the idea of ever becoming a techmarine, like many he liked having a mostly organic body. More importantly he liked the idea that he was more marine than machine. Of course it had been a disappointment to the chapter’s Forge Master who saw such potential in him. Indeed, it had been the chapter master himself who had suggested that he join the flight wing. Fendal had never looked back since and it was moments like this, soaring across the sky, like a true angel, that he the most alive.
“Get a grip of yourself old man.” Fendal chuckled to himself before opening the comm.-link to scout squad Quintus.
“Fendal to Sergeant Quintus, we are ETA 5 minutes to checkpoint Zulu. Will secure the site as best we can until you arrive. Suggest you double time it.”
***************************************************************************************************
Meanwhile, as the convoy rolled out and the surviving guardsmen nodded and waved their thanks to the space marine, the tactical squad and command section made their way after the scout squad.
Rallus Zenodius surveyed the scence as he opened the comm.-net to Company Command at Checkpoint Gamma.
“Zenodius to Command. Convoy is rolling and we are en route to resupply RV with hawk. Will be with you ETA 30 minutes. “

Tapping the commander on the shoulder pad and said, "Commander I found something on one of the traitors that I needed to bring to your attention."
He reached into one of his ammo pouches and pulled out a small Chaos necklace and handed it to Commander.

++Sergeant Agrippa. Prepare to follow Scout Squad Quintus to the Thunderhawk RV. Double Time.++
Manius looked around at the now gathered 1st squad.
“OKAY FIRST SQUAD. I WANT DOUBLE FIRETEAM ECHELON FORMATION. DELTA YOU WARE LEFT FLANK. CHARLIE WILL WARE RIGHT FLANK. 50 METER SEPERATION FROM THE SCOUTS”
He looked around to see if his command had sunk in knowing that it was unnecessary – such actions were second nature to these Brother Marines.
“OKAY LETS MOVE OUT BROTHERS, DOUBLE TIME!”
The two fireteam’s moved off after the scouts at a ground eating run Delta fireteam covering the left flanks as Charlie team running parallel to them covered the Right.
It was an ideal formation from which to launch an attack or create a defense upon which the scouts could fall back on if necessary.
“BROTHERS, ONCE WE HAVE DUSTED OFF I WANT BATTLE LOADS REPLENISHED WITH ALL ALACRITY AND THEN ANY SUIT DAMAGE TREATED WITH ARMOR REPAIR CEMENT AND VAC-SEALENT. LET ME KNOW NOW IF YOU HAVE ANY SERIOUS DAMAGE?”
And with that he awaited the confirmations and began to work out his own ammo expenditure.

Kraytirous wasted no time. He quickly made his time into position, listening intently to his Sergeant's instructions. Despite the Heavy Bolter's strong feel in his arms, Kraytirous still preferred the weight of a rocket launcher against his shoulder. Nodding his head as he began to speak back to the Sergeant. "Sir, request to speak?"
He slid his hand across the Heavy Bolter, feeling slightly guilty about wishing to abandon it, like trying to shed a good friend for another. The weapon had served him well, but he knew that his true companionship lay with the Rocket Launcher. He hoped that the Thunder Hawk came with the proper armaments to allow him to rearm with his weapon of choice.

The squad ran in formation, equipment and heavy footfalls making a racket. ‘Unavoidable’ thought Sgt Agrippa as he continued looking around and checking everyone’s position as well as ensuring that they did not lose contact with the fleeter scouts.
The Gunship was 5 minutes out and they would have to really push it to get to the LZ on time.
++Sir, request to speak?++
Manius turned – it was Brother Shalluat the Squads Heavy weapon specialist – and on a private Vox channel the Sgt noted. He had not had the opportunity to speak with the marine Gunner since before the action, Brother Shalluat being with Fireteam Delta.
“OF COURSE BROTHER. WHATS ON YOUR MIND?”
Said Sgt Agrippa still scanning his squad.
