Commander Zenodius stood around the makeshift deployment table in the ruined administration hall on the east side of St Sabbats Square. With him was Captain Antonius, Chaplain Perphius, Colonel Henrich Grendan of the 123rd Vandian Grenadiers and Commanding officer of the remains of the Imperial Guard planetside and the venerable techmarine Vahrdel. Meanwhile Apothecary Silvanus was assisting the corpsmen in the makeshift field hospital on the other side of the square. The square was a buzz of activity as the guard strike force conducted final checks and preparations for the mission. Tactical Sergeant Agrippa was busy speaking with his squad, more out of frustration and impatience than out of necessity. Scout Master Julius Quintus walked from scout to scout, checking them over and speaking bits and pieces to each neophyte. For many this would be one of their first contacts with rebels and perhaps the dark powers. “There is a distinct possibility that there is something far worse behind what we have already seen,” started Colonel Grendan, a tall man dwarfed by the super humans nearby. “Symbols, reports confirm the presence of crude altars encountered in some of the hab blocks used by large groups of rebels. Mutants and degenerates have also been encountered. I am at a loss. With our present strength we are stretched to deal with the rebels and traitor gangs, let alone something worse.”Captain Antonius cleared his throat before replying, “which is why it is imperative that we take and hold the spaceport so Imperial reinforcements can land. “ This was met by a murmur of concurrence from those assembled before Antonius nodded and silence enveloped the room. “Most imperative is we get the defence batteries on the walls operational, we can then establish dominance and stop enemy air support from being effective. At present the base is on emergency power from the backup generator in the basement of the hospital.”
Coloneol Grendan took another look at the map of the spaceport, the map was imprinted in his mind and there was no doubt he had looked over it hundreds of times since the deployment of the adeptus astartes chapter. “We have a few thunderbolts and lightning craft that will do their best to keep any enemy fighters busy until the automated defense batteries are back online.” He turned to the techmarine whose electronic eyes scanned over the map of the spaceport and blueprints of the power generator centre, “Venerable techmarine, would you be able to get the power back online and the defences working again?” Techmarine Vahrdel turned his attention to the Imperial Guard man and nodded quickly, the metallic voice box was sharp and filled the silence with an eerie clanging echo “Yes, yes, that is no problem. However, depending on damage and other factors it may take some time, yes. I will work fast.”With the matter of the defense settled the party was led on to the obvious next step, the infiltration of the site and elimination of the defenders. Captain Antonius turned to Zenodius, “Commander, your suggestion for the securing phase of this operation?” Zenodius had been mulling it over for some time; there were many options available that would lead to the successful re-capture of the spaceport. However, many factors had to be weighed against each other. A direct assault would likely incur casualties but ensure the quickest time, whereas an infiltration that was next to silent would see a slower time but could be done without any casualties; meaning more available men for the defense of the base. “Brothers, Colonel. I am pushed toward a silent infiltration. One scout section can take out any sentries at the gatehouse and proceed to the Relay Tower and neutralize the comms centre. This will delay any reinforcements to the base. Meanwhile the other scout section could sweep the generator station and then move onto to neutralise the motorpool and barracks with the other scout section. Once the Relay tower and generator station is secured, delta fireteam of our tactical squad can then escort Brother Vahrdel to the power station and get the automated batteries online. Once the barracks and motorpool are being neutralized, Charlie will form a perimeter inside the base by the gates to allow the Guardsmen to infil. No prisoners, all traitors are to be exterminated.”There was a moment of silence as the other members of the operation council went through the plan in their head. Then each nodded their assent or mummured their approval. “Then we are settled,” finished Antonius, “Colonel, have your men ready to deploy by the start of dusk, two hours. Commander, I want the strike force briefed and ready to deploy within the hour. If that is all, you are all dismissed. May the Emperor be our cloak and armour this night.”**************************************************** Ba: Barracks, (one storey) Motor Pool, (warehouse like building) RT: Relay Tower three storeys and a dish on the roof) C: Comms centre: ( 2 storeys) G Guard Tower GH: Guard House Medical centre: ground floor and basement Power: two storeys high, main generator station. Outside Brother Sgt Agrippa moved among the Marines of 1st Tactical Squad 4th Company, assessing equipment loads, offering battlefield critique (both positive and negative) to their battle ROMs which he had been playing back on his own data pad since they reached check point Gamma some 2 hours previously. At the same time he was ignoring the wide eyed stares of various Guardsmen who would pause every time one of them came close to the Marines. Most Guardsmen, or indeed Imperial citizens would never see an Astartes with their own eyes. To them the Marines were things of myth and saga, spoken of with hushed whispers. The Vandians though were less affected by their presence, Manius noted with approval, a sign that some of these soldiers had experience (possibly handed down?) of working with Space Marines in the past. He stopped next to brother Shalluat and briefly inspected his Sure strike missile launcher and ammo backpack. Satisfied he turned to the Leader of Delta Fireteam.
“BROTHER SHALLUAT. I WAS CONCERNED THAT YOU WERE TOO CONSERVATIVE WITH YOUR INITIAL SUPPRESSION FIRE WHEN THE ASSAULT BEGAN”
He played Brother Shalluat’s battle ROM on his data pad showing the initial short bursts the Marine Gunner was putting down on the central building. 3 round burst blew out large chips and shattered windows on the upper stories of the building.
“HOWEVER THE LATER FIRE SUPPORT WAS SPOT ON”
Fast forwarding to a later stage in the battle showed satisfyingly long burst’s of Heavy bolts into the building virtually shredding the middle and then upper stories of that building. He slapped the Marine on his shoulder before moving on.
He was also keeping one ear tuned into the command circuit and was listening to the on going briefing between the 4th companies officers and the Colonel in chief of the 123rd Vandian Grenadiers Guard Regiment (the only formation still worthy of the title ‘Guard Regiment’ left on world) and a man who had ‘inherited’ the remains of other Guard and PDF formations on world.
+++….Commander, your suggestion for the securing phase of this operation?+++
This to Zenodius from Captain Antonius, 4th Companies Commanding officer, Agrippa stopped moving and turned his attention fully to the briefing.
++++Brothers, Colonel. I am pushed toward a silent infiltration. One scout section can take out any sentries at the gatehouse and proceed to the Relay Tower and neutralize the comms centre. Sgt Agrippa ran the scenario in his head as Captain Antonius continued

Finished Antonius,

Jacen regrouped to Sergeant Agrippa's position with the rest of his squad. It seemed that everyone had survived. He wouldn't say that he was happy. He didn't trust some of them and he knew the feeling was mutual. He also knew that the only reason any of them had survived was because the Emperor had given them the strength to fight in his name.
Jacen listened as Agrippa gave every marine critics about the mission. Jacen wasn't surprised about what he was told. He had heard similar things before at every debreif.
Jacen stood up a little straighter at the sound of Commander Zenodius' voice over the vox.
Once the barracks and motorpool are being neutralized, Charlie will form a perimeter inside the base by the gates to allow the Guardsmen to infil. No prisoners, all traitors are to be exterminated.”
Jacen nodded slightly to himself. It sounded like a good plan, but there was one thing that didn't make sense. Why would Delta fireteam escort Techmarine Vahrdel while Charlie guarded the perimeter. Jacen knew that Charlie could hold the perimeter well enough, but if the traitors were to bring up armor then Delta would be the better choice to defend there with their heavy weapons.
FORCE COMMAND, SGT AGRIPPA. MAY I SUGGEST A REVISION TO THE PLAN? CHARLIE TEAM ESCORTS HONOURED BROTHER VAHRDEL TO THE POWER STATION . THEIR WEAPONS ARE BETTER SUITED TO AN URBAN SETTING WHILE DELTA TEAM WOULD BE BETTER SUITED TO HOLDING THE MAIN GATE GIVEN THE STATIC NATURE OF THEIR HEAVY WEAPON.]=
Despite himself a slight smile tugged at Jacen's lips. He could always trust Sgt Agrippa to make the best decisions. Sgt Agrippa was one of the few Marines that Jacen put his trust into.

The higher-echelons were holding a meeting in the makeshift command center. Amores moved closer to get to a spot where he could here.
"---ralize the comms centre. No prisoners, all traitors are to be exterminated.”
Commander Zenodius was laying out a plan to assault the spaceport. Amores mulled over it, and liked it. Rather than a costly assault, the commander was going for a silent infiltration. Slower, yes, but far less possible casualties. One thiing that didn't make sense was the placement of the fire teams. Surely it would be better ---? But Seargent Agrippa spoke first, suggesting that Delta hold the perimeter rather thean escort, so that Brother Shalluat's Missile Launcher would be far more effective.
While Amores was reviewing the map on his HUD, a noise startled him. Looking up, he noticed a Guardsmen. The man was obviously scared, nearly shaking in his boots. He couldn't have been more than 20 years old. Amores had heard the veterans talking before about how Space Marines were feared almost as much as the Enemy, and he saw it was true. Ignoring the Guardsmen, Amores voxed Sgt. Agrippa. +Sir, just a suggestion, but should we not equip the scouts with Stalker Rounds?+ The Stalker rounds were made specifically for this type of mission. Silenced, they would allow the scouts to go undetected for as long as possible.

It had been a strange afternoon.
Coming from such bloodlust Silvanus found it somewhat odd that he was suddenly healing the wounded once again, in a makeshift camp over to the sidelines.
Imperial Guardsmen were fragile in comparison to Space Marines, Emperor bless them: any healing techniques employed by the apothecary were largely useless due to the unorthodox healing process the Apothecary employed to with his fellow space marines.
As of now though the infiltration mission was away and the Apothecary made quick note to propose a serious question to the Commander. Leaving the makeshift hospital and making his way over he quietly asked the Commander his question.
" Commander, I understand that the generator is a prime concerned but being an Apothecary I am concerned at what might lie within the Hospital. Perhaps you could cut the power allowing us to quickly overtake the hospital then restoring the power afterwards. This will allow me to take care of the wounded, guardsman or space marine in a much more efficient manner. But whatever you choose may the Emperor cast his smile upon you
The Apothecary gave a small Imperial Eagle salute to the Commander before walking off again to attend the leftover wounded.

Commander Zenodius walked from the briefing into the square. Sure enough the marines had been listening, as everyone knew they would have. Just as he entered the dimming light of the square, his helmet under his arm, his eyes scanned what were to be the imperial forces that would secure the future of this planet. Then his vox crackled and sgt Agrippa came over the comm. Channel.
+++FORCE COMMAND, SGT AGRIPPA. MAY I SUGGEST A REVISION TO THE PLAN? CHARLIE TEAM ESCORTS HONOURED BROTHER VAHRDEL TO THE POWER STATION . THEIR WEAPONS ARE BETTER SUITED TO AN URBAN SETTING WHILE DELTA TEAM WOULD BE BETTER SUITED TO HOLDING THE MAIN GATE GIVEN THE STATIC NATURE OF THEIR HEAVY WEAPON+++
Zenodius smiled, Agrippa was a keen mind, rarely one to forget anything and always a level head. “Brother Agrippa, I care not which fireteam escorts Brother Vahrdel, only that the job is completed. We shall swap the fireteam roles then as per your request.” Zenodius walked across the square nodding at some guardsmen as he passed. To be afraid, to fear, he had forgotten this feeling, for fear denied faith and a space marine was steadfast in his faith. “Form up, everyone to the west side of the square, it is time brothers.”
Just as he walked across the square Silvanus intercepted him and offered a quiet question. Rallus had much respect for the marine, he was not only deadly but fearless and many of the chapter’s best geenseed had been preserved because of his heroic actions on Armageddon.
But whatever you choose may the Emperor cast his smile upon you”
Rallus gave one of his distinctive half smiles, “I should hope so brother, so otherwise I would be damned. The base defences are our primary concern brother, if the enemy air support is allowed to establish dominance our mission will fail. We shall do our best to secure the hospital in time. However, I fear when the enemy finally hear of the re-capture they will spare nothing in their attempts to dislodge us. Men will stand and die on the defensive line, the only medical attention they will get is that which they receive on the line. It is imperative that we hold the landing pads until reinforcements arrive. I fear my words spring pessimism, so let us walk together, enjoy the last of the Emperor’s light this day before our bloody work starts. ”
With that the Force Commander and the company’s Apothecary walked across the square as Chaplain Perphius emerged from the briefing building and followed them across the square, no doubt to conduct the prayer before battle with the assembled company.

Jacen approached Sgt Agrippa from behind.
He made the sign of the aquila and said, "Brother-Sergeant I have a question. As per Force Commander Zenodius' orders our squad is to be split into the two fire-teams and work on different objectives. I believe that you will lead Charlie Team in escorting Techmarine Vahrdel to his destination."
He paused a moment to collect this thoughts and then continued, "I am curious about who you have in mind to lead Delta team in the guarding of the perimeter."

As always Commander Zenoduis was prompt and to the point. After asking his question Silvanus has received his response,
“I should hope so brother, so otherwise I would be damned. The base defences are our primary concern brother, if the enemy air support is allowed to establish dominance our mission will fail. We shall do our best to secure the hospital in time. However, I fear when the enemy finally hear of the re-capture they will spare nothing in their attempts to dislodge us. I fear my words spring pessimism, so let us walk together, enjoy the last of the Emperor’s light this day before our bloody work starts. ”
His words rung of wisdom and the Apothecary took it to heat, but he had been expecting to preform field work as he was a combat medic. Yet Silvanus hoped that the hospital would soon be secured for at least the supplies, before performing field operations took its toll on his medical efficiency.
Silvanus walked with Zenoduis upon the open ground that would lead to his assembled bothers. The time of battle was upon then and Chaplain Perphius had followed behind them. In Silvanus's heart he prepared himself for the prayers the Chaplain was sure to lead.
Silvanus gave himself the quick thought,"Emperor willing, no one would have to pray for the fallen."

Brother Amores sounded over his vox channel as Agrippa began his own equipment checks.
+++Sir, just a suggestion, but should we not equip the scouts with Stalker Rounds?+++
Manius considered the question for a moment - he suddenly realised that he had no idea as to the load out of the scouts.
"A VALID QUESTION BROTHER, I WILL ASK SCOUT SGT QUINTUS"
Killing the comm he noticed that the scouts were being breifed by the venerable veteran so he selected the Scout Sgts datapad Frequency and recorded him a quick message rather than disturb him.
"BROTHER QUINTUS, SGT AGRIPPA - DO YOUR LADS HAVE SILENCED STALKER ROUNDS?"
He then sent it - a message flashed up informing him that Sgt Quintus's datapads spirit acknowledged reciept of said missive.
Checking that the Drum magazine was seated firmly in his weapon, Manius then turned his attention to the weapons scope ensuring that the machine spirit within was not obscured in such a way to confound its abilities in battle.
He had been given the ancient weapon by Codicer Silvanus 160 years ago after saving the librarians life in battle and he had carried it with pride ever since.
Brother Catern stood to one side of him, paused and then spoke.
"I am curious about who you have in mind to lead Delta team in the guarding of the perimeter."
Looking up from administering too his bolter, and tightening up its 3 point strap to leave it hanging "ready to use" at an angle by his right hip Sgt Agrippa considered his answer.
"I WILL LEAVE BROTHER SHALLUAT IN COMMAND OF DELTA GIVEN THAT HE IS THE PRINCIPLE HEAVY WEAPON OPERATOR"
He drew his MK10 Hells teeth and gave it a once over whilst whispering the prayer of activation to awake the spirit within before powering it up for 5 seconds. Satisfied he turned back to Brother Catern sheathing the weapon as he did so.
"OUR JOB IS TO ESCORT HONORED BROTHER TECHMARINE VAHRDEL TO THE GENERATOR. THAT IS OUR ONLY CONCERN AND IS MISSION CRITICAL. ONCE WE ARE IN THE BASE IT WILL LIKELY GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL - JUST HOW YOU LIKE IT EH BROTHER?"
He laughed, a harsh barking sound that turned the heads of some of the nearby Guardsmen, before contining having made a snap decision.
"ONCE INSIDE THE BASE YOU WILL HAVE THE HONOR OF TAKING POINT"
He unbuckled the sheathed chainsword holding it before him in both hands.
"THIS WEAPON HAS SERVED 18 MASTERS INCLUDING MYSELF SINCE ITS BIRTH IN 823 OF THE PREVIOUS MILLENIUM"
He passed it reverently to the Marine with boths hands
"USE IT WITH HONOR IN THE COMING BATTLE BROTHER CARTERN - OH AND I DO WANT IT BACK IN ONE PEICE"
Deadly serious now he paused before going on raising his voice so that all of 1st Squad could hear him.
"AUDACITY AND SPEED IS OF THE ESCENCE BROTHERS, CHARLIE MUST GET BROTHER VAHRDEL TO THAT GENERATOR AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND WE WILL NOT STOP FOR ANYTHING OR BE DESTRACTED FROM OUR GOAL UNTIL THE AIR DEFENCE NET WORK IS ON LINE. WE WILL PUNCH THROUGH OR BY-PASS ANY RESISTANCE. WE WILL NOT STOP TO MOP UP POCKETS OF TRAITORS OR INDEED PAUSE IN OUR ADVANCE FOR ANY WOUNDED"
He paused allowing that to sink in as Force Commander Zenodius marched over.
“Form up, everyone to the west side of the square, it is time brothers.”
Sgt Agrippa nodded before turning to 1st squad slamming his right fist into his chest plate in salute.
"DUTY AND HONOR BROTHERS"

"I WILL LEAVE BROTHER SHALLUAT IN COMMAND OF DELTA GIVEN THAT HE IS THE PRINCIPLE HEAVY WEAPON OPERATOR" responded Sgt Agrippa.
Jacen nodded, it was the obvious choice, but it was odd since brother Shalluat wasn't the most senior member of the squad.
Jacen let a smile appear on his lips, a rare show of emotion. It made him happy to know that Sgt Agrippa actually took the time to get to know those under his command unlike other commanders throughout the Imperium. He was right, Jacen enjoyed nothing more than taking the fight up into the face of the xeno and the heretic.
"ONCE INSIDE THE BASE YOU WILL HAVE THE HONOR OF TAKING POINT" said the Sergeant as he pulled out his chainsword and handed it to Jacen, "THIS WEAPON HAS SERVED 18 MASTERS INCLUDING MYSELF SINCE ITS BIRTH IN 823 OF THE PREVIOUS MILLENIUM. USE IT WITH HONOR IN THE COMING BATTLE BROTHER CARTERN - OH AND I DO WANT IT BACK IN ONE PEICE"
Jacen's eyes widened in surprised. He had been distrusted by his brothers for so long that a kindness such as this was completely unknown to him. Jacen stared into Sgt Agrippa's eyes, trying to see if there was some alternative motive, but seeing none he accepted the ancient weapon.
He activated the blade and saluted the Sgt with it. "Sgt. I swear to that I will enact the Emperor's will with this blade. May the traitors tremble before our holy wrath! Duty and Honour!"

Brothers, Colonel.
Despite himself, Lucas grinned. although this mission required him to snipe, which Lucas was happy with, Lucas preferred to bring the battle to the enemy, slashing and cutting with his knife, or more preferable, a sword or combat blade.
pulling out his knife, Lucas gazed over the blade, taking in the history from the nicks the blade carried. putting the blade back into it's sheathLucas drew his sniper. he looked down the scope. "No damage to that" he muttered.
Sgt, what are we going to do about Magnus? his heavy bolter isn't exactly a stealth weapon." Lucas was glad he thought of that when he did, the heavy weapon of Magnus would surely give them away when it was time to start their mission

Jacen sheathed the Chainsword at his side and slung his bolter behind him. Not having a pistol meant that he couldn't fire at the enemy while armed with the blade, but he was confident that it wouldn't prove to be too much of a problem.
Jacen followed his squad to west side of the square but stopped as he caught sight of Chaplain Claudius. Jacen was happy to see the Warrior-Priest. During his time as an initiate the Chaplain was the only one who trusted him and believed that he was free of taint.
Jacen approached the Chaplain and made the sign of the Aquilla. "Revered Chaplain, do you join us on the battlefield this day? Your holy Crozius would be most welcome in bringing death to the unfaithful."

Shalluat nodded his head at his Sergeant's words, accepting the criticism as constructive. He admitted that the Sergeant was correct, and took the advice to heart. Once the Sergeant became preoccupied with their orders and the squad was dismissed, Kraytirous turned about and made his way towards the Thunderhawk.
Kraytirous had rearmed himself, his heavy bolter now laying in the Thunderhawk's armament chamber. He donned a holster around the front of his armor, its leather straps holding half a dozen missiles of both frag and krak composition. The rockets were unprimed, so even if they banged against his armor they would not detonate. Then Kraytirous heard that he was to be designated as leader of Delta team. Kraytirous straightened his back, feeling honor surge through him. He would not let the Sergeant down.

Andrus Taranius stood waiting ,his sniper rifle slung over his shoulder. He was pleased that he could once more embody the will of the emperor, in a form that was well suited to his demeanour, the sniper rifle. The mission seemed simple, a traditional take and hold scenario, something they had done quite often. The snipers would gun down any opposition hiding in the windows or stairwells, whilst the main force would storm the rest of the buildings under the cover of sniper fire. He silently mouthed prayers, each one a prayer of justice, a prayer he hoped the Emperor would listen to, and empower him to strike swiftly and without mercy against the traitorous spawn facing them. He then hefted his sniper rifle, unclipped the mag and replaced it with a new one. It wouldn't do to run out of ammo in the middle of a fight, each shot could be crucial and letting his squad, his brothers in arms, down would not be acceptable. He then checked his sniper scope, the targeting relay in his goggles and the distribution of his equipment. Andrus Taranius was satisfied that he could uphold the honour of his chapter and stood straightening himself, his legs apart and his hands behind his back, he waited...

Tiberius shouldered the bundle of missiles, and made a final check of his bolter. Satisfied that the weapon was primed, Tiberius turned and followed Brother Shalluat down the Thunderhawk's ramp.
Delta team, with Shalluat in command, was the secure the gatehouse and allow the guardsmen to attack through the gate once the spaceport defenses had been disabled.
Accepting of his part in the Commander's plan, Tiberius ran over the phases in his mind, examining firing lines, potential hazards and dangers of the attack.
They were to move within the hour.
The guardsmen would follow, and bolster the defense of the spaceport against enemy hands. Tiberius prayed for the guardsmen. Without the protection granted by the Emperor's finest armor, they would be vulnerable to enemy fire and many would surely die.
Tiberius shook of the thoughts and visions of himself, clad not in the rainment of a Space Marine, but in the armor of a guard, almost no better than clothing.
The guard serve well, and do their duty by the Emperor and their regiment. If they should fall, they die with honor. they are not to be pitied or scorned.
Tiberius turned to his wargear. Soon, there would be death enough for all.
